What you will learn
F = μN; measuring limiting static friction; normal force conditions.
Specification mapping: B2.3, B2.3.1
Prerequisites: B2.2
Physical principles
Static friction acts between surfaces that are not sliding relative to each other and opposes impending relative motion. Its magnitude adjusts to balance the tangential force up to a limiting value. At the threshold of slipping, Flim = μsN, where N is the normal contact force and μs is the dimensionless coefficient of static friction.
The equation F = μN describes the limiting static value here, not every force before slipping. Before the limit, static friction satisfies
F
≤ μsN. On a horizontal surface with no additional vertical forces and no vertical acceleration, N = mg. On a slope, under an angled pull or in an accelerating system, that equality cannot simply be assumed.
To measure μs, place a known mass on a horizontal test surface and pull horizontally with a calibrated force sensor. Slowly increase force and record the peak just before motion. Calculate μs = Flim/N. Repeat with consistent surfaces and loading, and consider contamination, wear and sensor response. Avoid jerking: an impulsive pull does not measure the quasi-static threshold cleanly.

Equations and relationships
Flim = μsN; |Fs| ≤ μsN
Worked examples and applications
Calculate coefficient
A 2.00 kg block begins sliding at 7.0 N. N = mg = 19.62 N. μs = 7.0/19.62 = 0.3568 ≈ 0.36.
Below threshold
If the same block is pulled horizontally with 3.0 N and remains at rest, static friction is 3.0 N, not 7.0 N. The limiting coefficient sets the maximum available friction.
Common misconceptions
Static friction is not always equal to μsN; it reaches that value at impending slip.
Examination technique
Specify “just about to slide” and draw the normal reaction perpendicular to the surface.
For an explanation, connect the physical cause to its effect. For a calculation, state the model, rearrange before substitution, retain intermediate digits, and finish with units. For a data question, refer to the actual readings and distinguish a trend from proof of a cause.
